New Tibetan Settlement Officer Elected in Nepal[Wednesday, 13 April 2010, 3:16 p.m.]

Mr Tsering Dhondup has been elected as the new Tibetan Settlement
Officer with an overwhelming majority of 87.13% of the total votes cast
by the Tibetans residing in Chorten and Jorpati (Choejor) regions in
Nepal’s capital Kathmandu.Of the total 917 votes cast in final
round of election on 10 April 2010, with 42 votes nullified, Mr Dhondup
secured 799 votes. The preliminary polling was conducted on 27 March.The
Election Commission announced the appointment of Mr Dhondup as the
Tibetan Settlement Officer for three years with effective from 20 April
2010 as per the Article 80 (1) of the Tibetan Election Regulations.The
election was conducted in accordance with the provision of popular
voting by the people enshrined in Article 73 of the Charter of Tibetans
in exile. In case of a candidate failing to secure 51% of the total
votes cast in the final election, the Article 74 in the Charter
stipulates that the Central Tibetan Administration will appoint a
settlement officer.
