
DHARAMSHALA: The result of the first year examination of Tibetan nuns seeking Geshema degrees (equivalent of a PhD in Buddhist Philosophy) was announced today.
In accordance with the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the historic decision to allow Tibetan nuns to receive Geshema degrees was taken during a meeting of representatives from six nunneries, Institute of Buddhist Dialectics and Tibetan nuns project held in Dharamsala on 18-19 May 2012. A regulation on the conferment of Geshema degrees to Tibetan nuns studying at nunneries and Buddhist learning institutes was also formulated during the meeting.
Accordingly, twenty-seven nuns sat in the first-ever examination of Geshema degree was held at Jamyang Choeling nunnery in Dharamsala from 20 May – 3 June this year. Twenty-five of them passed the exam.
Passang Lama of Khachoe Gakyil Ling or Kopen nunnery in Nepal topped the exam with 79.83 per cent. Tenzin Kunsel and Delek Wangmo of Dolma Ling nunnery in Dharamsala got 76.54 and 72.08 per cent respectively.
