DHARAMSHALA: Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday released the US State Department’s 2012 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, which documents severe repression and marked deterioration of human rights in Tibet.
The report says the Chinese government’s respect for and protection of human rights in the TAR and other Tibetan areas deteriorated markedly.
“Under the banner of maintaining social stability, the government engaged in the severe repression of Tibet’s unique religious, cultural, and linguistic heritage by, among other means, strictly curtailing the civil rights of China’s ethnic Tibetan population, including the freedoms of speech, religion, association, and movement,” it says.
“There was a deepening perception among Tibetans that they were systemically targeted for economic marginalization and educational and employment discrimination,” the report notes.
It reports other serious human rights abuses like extrajudicial killings, torture, arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial detentions, and house arrests.
The report says there was a high level of security forces throughout Tibet, particularly at major monasteries.
The oppressive security measures by authorities during its leadership transition across the Tibetan Plateau contributed to a further deterioration of the human rights situation, it says.
