DHARAMSHALA: CTA President Dr Lobsang Sangay today congratulated Tibetan American Dr Tenzin Dorjee on being unanimously elected as the chair of the bipartisan US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).
“It is a matter of great pride that a Tibetan American has been elected as the chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom,” President Dr Lobsang Sangay said.
“As the first Tibetan Buddhist to be elected to the post, you are an inspiration to Tibetans across the world. It is also a reflection of the Tibetan people’s capability and potential to make an impact on the global stage,” he added.
“The world is today beset with problems borne out of religious intolerance. Hence, as a Tibetan, you bring first hand knowledge and experience of religious repression that is ongoing in Tibet under Chinese occupation. Therefore, I am certain that you will do a remarkable job in promoting religious freedom across the world.”
“Moreover, your track record as a commissioner of the USCIRF since 2016 bears testament to your vision and endeavors. I wish you all the success in your new responsibilities,” Dr Sangay said.
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) unanimously elected Dr. Tenzin Dorjee as its Chair on 12 June. USCIRF is a federal government commission established by the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) that monitors the universal right to freedom of religion or belief abroad.
Responding to his election, Dr Dorjee said, “It is an honor and privilege to be unanimously elected Chair of the Commission. Our Commissioners bring a diverse array of complementary experiences and skills to the table, and we all share a collective commitment to the promotion of religious freedom or belief for those of all faiths and none.”
