A Tibetan Crippled Due to Police Beating Wednesday, 10 June 2009, 10:11a.m.
Dharamshala:
Ever since the massive and peaceful protests erupted in Tibet,
beginning March 2008, the public security bureau (PSBs) and people’s
armed police (PAPs) of the Chinese government have been routinely and
arbitrarily arresting and putting behind bars Tibetans who have
absolutely nothing to do with these protests. An information
received from a reliable source on 8 June said that on the night of 14
March 2008, a young man by the name of Phuntsok (21) belonging to Tashi
Gang Township of Meldro Gungkar (Ch: Mozhugongka) County under the
Lhasa Municipality, was arrested from his residence in the Karma
Kunsang area, located in eastern Lhasa, without providing any reason
for his arrest. “After the arrest, the PAPs beat him fiercely
and then locked him — along with other innocent Tibetan detainees — in
the storeroom of the Lhasa railway station. He was released after
having detained there for 20 days.”On returning home, the
source further said, he was given the bests of medical treatment but
his condition did not improve much. “At the moment, his physical
condition is very poor; he has to rely on walking sticks and cannot
stand straight due to back injury that he sustained from severe
beatings at the hands of the PAPs.” “Phuntsok is married with a one-year-old child. He used to drive a three-wheeler to provide for his family of three.”Although
Phuntsok did not participate in last March’s protest but he is one of
those many innocent Tibetans who have been arrested by the PAPs and
subjected to torture to severe beatings for their alleged involvement
in it, the source said.
