
WASHINGTON DC: CTA President Dr Lobsang Sangay was warmly received at the airport on his arrival by Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama Mr Ngodup Tsering, ICT Vice Chairman Mr Bhuchung K. Tsering, representatives from Capitol Area Tibetan Association and Community members.
His first meeting was with Senator Steve Daines (R- Montana) who is also a commissioner of Congressional Executive Commission on China at latter’s office on the Capitol hill. Senator Daines shared his experiences on his recent official visit to Tibet and said that he has raised various issues including religious persecution in Tibet with Chinese authorities.
Dr Sangay briefed the Senator on the current situation in Tibet particularly the ongoing demolition of Larung Gar and Yachen Gar Buddhist institutes and the wave of Tibetan self immolation protests. He particularly requested Senator Daines to discuss the Middle Way Policy, a policy adopted by CTA to resolve the Tibet issue, with Chinese authorities whenever opportunity arises. Dr Sangay thanked the senator for raising the issue and invited him to visit Dharamshala. The meeting lasted for about half an hour.
Dr Sangay met Mr Daniel Twining, President of International Republican Institute and their senior staff. The institute is primary working for the promotion of Democracy in many countries. Various issues were discussed ranging from China’s growing influence, advancing democracy, Tibetan exile community to building partnership between International Republican Institute and Central Tibetan Administration.
President Dr Lobsang Sangay is accompanied by Representative Ngodup Tsering during the meeting.
