Chinese Police Open Fire in Eastern Tibet, 9 Arrested and Several InjuredWednesday, 22 April 2009, 11:44 a.m.
Dharamshala: At least 9 Tibetans, including a woman and 8 men, were arrested and several injured after the Chinese police opened fire on Tibetans protesting against the Chinese government at Nyagrong County in Karze Tibet Autonomous Prefecture (incorporated into Sichuan Province).The Chinese security forces with some 13 armoured vehicles stationed in the region, started firing indiscriminately at residents of Thangkya (Thangkyi) and Thangkya Depa, who were holding a peaceful demonstration on 15 April.The demonstration was against a harsh court verdict to be delivered on three Tibetans arrested for their role in a protest in early March this year. It also aims to show Tibetans’ strong dislike towards the continued repression by Chinese military personnel following the farming boycott campaign.Those arrested were identified as Gonpo Tsewang; Yiga; Alo; Drakbe; Dawa Drakpa; Gyashe; Kyaka; Gonbe (sustained gunshot wounds on leg) and the woman named Aga. Levelling charges of “sedition” and supporting “motivations of Dalai supporters”, a Tibetan scholar of Gomang monastery in Ngaba Tibet Autonomous Prefecture (incorporated into Qinghai Province) was arrested around 2 April.The Chinese Public Security Bureau officials accused the monk named Drogru Tsultrim for writing articles considered to be against the motherland. He was picked up from his room and since then his whereabouts remain unknown.The articles appeared in a journal called “Khawe Tse Sog” which was written by Drogru Tsultrim while he was studying at the monastery.Tsultrim, aged 27 and son of Nagya, was born at Mangra County in Tsolho Prefecture. He had earlier studied at Lutsang and Dhitsa monasteries in Mangra County. In 2005, he began studying at Gomang monastery.
