
Dharamshala: The Terminology Desk of the Department of Education (CTA) has successfully concluded the 37th meeting of the High-Level Standardising Board held from 29 July to 2 August 2024.
The previous board members of the sixth term successfully completed their three-year tenure. A brief ceremony was held to welcome the newly appointed seventh board members, who were appointed by the Kashag. Tenzin Rabgyal, representing the Department of Education’s Terminology Desk, introduced the new members during the ceremony, while also outlined the objectives of the meeting, presented project reports, and engaged in discussions pertaining of procedural matters and forthcoming initiatives.
Additionally, Kunga Gyalsten, the president of the seventh Standardising Board and Additional Secretary of the Department of Religion and Culture, addressed the strategies involved in standardising terminology. Following this, the official meeting of the seventh term board was convened.
On the second day of the meeting, Jigmey Namgyal, the Secretary of the Department of Education (DOE), expressed gratitude to the board members for their commitment to the DOE. He emphasised the significance of this initiative as a program aimed at establishing uniform terminology. He particularly highlighted the importance of using standardised terms in both private and public sectors, especially within the education sector and the offices of the Central Tibetan Administration. Furthermore, he underscored the necessity for discussions regarding terms that remain unstandardised and the responsibility of committee members to understand and promote awareness of the drafted terms.
Throughout the five-day meeting, the board successfully discussed and standardised 400 out of 600 Tibetan terms applicable to various fields, including Education, Law, Politics, Economics, Arithmetic, Environment, and Technology. A total of 20,091 terms were standardised, leading to the launching of 17 glossaries of standardised terms. Furthermore, a dedicated website and application have been developed as part of this initiative so far.
The seventh High-Level Standardising Board members appointed by Kashag include Kunga Gyaltsen, the Additional Secretary of the Department of Religion and Culture, as the board president. Other members of the board are Scholars Lhakpa Tsering and Kalsang Wangdue, Geshe Ngawang Namdol, Menrampa Sonam Dolkar Oshoe, former TCV English teacher Tenzin Dargye, former scientific director of the Tibetan Library of Tibetan Works and Archives Karma Thubten, and Urgyen Tenzin, the Head of the Terminology Section in the Department of Education, CTA.
