Mission: Tibet Corps seeks to inspire Tibetans to become directly engaged in tangible work to build and strengthen the Tibetan community, its institutions, and the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), to surmount barriers and gaps in space and resources, building on our own collective strength to support the Tibetan people and nation.
Core-Purpose: Tibet Corps offers talented community-minded Tibetan professionals and college students an opportunity and platform to serve their community through a voluntary service program initially involving the CTA and eventually selected Tibetan NGOs (TiNGOs). The project seeks to harness and mobilize available talent and link them back to the needs of the community and its various institutions, thereby building the capacity of the Tibetan system.
Fellows Profile: Tibet Corps fellows will be drawn from working professionals (and post-graduate and doctoral students); retired professionals many of whom have prior experience of working at various Tibetan institutions; and college students. Professionals include a person who has obtained a degree in a professional field as well as an individual having strong competence in a particular activity. Applicants should demonstrate Tibetan heritage and origin.
Project Description: There are two service tracks: professionals and students. The student intern track will be centered on a cohort of undergraduate student fellows, provided with educational training and orientation, and placed in Tibetan schools and settlements where they will assist with English language instructions and other projects. Professional will be teamed up with a staff member within each host institute. They will have the opportunity to respond to clear service opportunities posted on the project website and will receive clear service descriptions, pre-service orientation and debriefing, supervision, travel reimbursement, recognition for their services, and the opportunity to network and collaborate with others in the program. Professionals will be encouraged to share their knowledge across various institutions and bring new perspective and innovation through networking events (both during and after service) and online discussion forums.
Tibet Corps is scheduled to launch as a pilot in 2012.
