Workshop for Regional Election Commissions Begins

Dharamshala 4 May 2005: The Election Commission of the Central Tibetan Administration began a two-day workshop of all the regional election commissions today at the Gangchen Kyishong staff mess. The workshop is aimed at educating the regional election commissions about the changes introduced in the electoral rules and regulations during the 13th Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies.
The election commissioner Mr. Tashi Phuntsok, in his inaugural address gave a brief introduction on the aims and objectives of the workshop. He hoped that the workshop would educate the Tibetan public about the electoral procedures and rules so that elections could be fair and participated by as many people as possible.

The election commissioner also said that the commission hopes to educate the Tibetan voters through the workshop about the importance of electoral rights and rules, especially keeping in view next year’s elections for the 14th Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies and the 13th Kashag. The commission invited Mr. Tekhang Namgyal Dorjee, former election commissioner, to brief the participants about the electoral rules and regulations concerning the elections for the Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies, the Kashag, and the regional Tibetan freedom movements.
The participants to the workshop are mostly the representatives and welfare officers of the various Tibetan settlements in India, Nepal and Bhutan. They operate as regional election commissioners during elections.
The participants will also attend another workshop on administration organised by the department of home from 6 May.
