Dharamshala: A young Tibetan woman in New York, Ms. Kunchok Dolma, won the prestigious America TV award, the Emmy on 4 May. Kunchok Dolma received the award for the TV series ‘Rolando’s Rights’, which she created and produced for her program We Speak NYC at the New York Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.
Kunchok Dolma is a Tibetan refugee who helps immigrants in New York to learn English through the We Speak NYC initiative of the NY Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. She immigrated to US from India in the year 2005.
Kunchok describes herself as a student, thinker, story teller and an immigrant woman of color in the struggle on her twitter handle.
Her TV series ‘Rolanda’s Rights’ won the Emmy in the category of Instructional/Informational Video Production.
Kunchok donned a traditional Tibetan attire as she received the Emmy as the creator/Supervising producer of the film. On the podium of the 62nd annual New York Emmy Awards Gala, she cheered with the award in her hand, “For all of the adult education educators doing incredible work with limited resources, for the 3.2 million immigrant New Yorkers, making America great again, and again and again. Bhod Gyalo!”
Bhod Gyalo is a Tibetan patriotic phrase which translates as “Victory for Tibet”.
In addition to her previous work as Director of the We Speak NYC program at the NYC Mayor’s Office, Kunchok is currently a Law student at the University of Virginia and holds a Graduate degree in International Relations from Oxford University.
The Emmy awards is the equivalent of an Academy Award for film, the Tony Award for theater, and the Grammy Award for music. It is known to be the highest recognition in the American Television industry.
