Dharamshala:
Ms Tsering Woeser, a well known Tibetan writer living in Beijing who
has covered 2008 protests by Tibetans against the Chinese government is
awarded the Courage in Journalism award by the International Women’s Media Foundation on 19 October. The
award was declared in New York. Claudia Julieta Duque of Colombia, Alma
Guillermoprieto of Mexico, and Vicky Ntetema of Tanzania were three other women who were also awarded with the Courage in Journalism Award.Woeser
could not attend the award ceremony where about 600 people were present
because her passport was confiscated by the Chinese government.
However, in her videotaped acceptance speech she said, she gathered
facts of the protests and put them on her blog ‘Invisible Tibet’ to let
the world know what was happening in Tibet. Her blog was read by
millions a day. The Chinese authorities made several attempts to block
it. “Every kind of inhumanity and injustice is still being
visited upon Tibet,” Woeser said. “Many outstanding people, innocent
people, have been arrested and are suffering unimaginable torment.”Woeser said, “I will keep my one-person media operation going for it is the weapon of the powerless.”
