On the anniversary of India’s 72nd Independence Day, social media was flooded with Tibetans extending their warmest wishes to India and the Indian people.
As a token of appreciation towards host country, Tibetans have updated their profile pictures with the national flag of India.
The official pages of Central Tibetan Administration @Tibet.Net and @TibetTV shared the celebration of the event by CTA via pictures and videos respectively.

CTA President Dr Lobsang Sangay along with cabinet ministers and secretaries and CTA officials observed India’s Independence Day at Kashag Secretariat in Gangchen Kyishong.

After unfurling the Indian national flag, President Sangay spoke to media and said, “[India] has done more for Tibetans than any other country. Hence, the generous and loving people of India deserve our congratulations and a happy Independence day”.

At the invitation of Himachal Pradesh government, Health Kalon Choekyong Wangchuk attended the 72nd state-level Independence Day celebrations with the gracious presence of Himachal CM Jai Ram Thakur at Indora, Kangra, H.P., India.
Also, Tibetan settlements across India including schools, monasteries, and CTA regional offices celebrated this special occasion.
This year also marks CTA’s ‘Year of Gratitude’ and has already hosted two major “Thank You” events, one in Dharamshala and one in Karnataka, to thank India for its continuous and unwavering support for the Tibetan people.
Even though it had only been 12 years since India had achieved independence, it generously provided refuge to Tibetans who had fled China’s illegal occupation of Tibet. Tibetans have now been in exile for the past 60 freely practicing their rights and freedom without any restrictions and interference. Therefore, the thank you year could not have come at a better time.
Let’s take a tour of netizens’ reactions to the special occasion on social media:
