The most trending story on our social media platforms this week was the ongoing 23rd Shoton Festival in Dharamshala. This year, there are eleven troupes across India and one from Nepal, participating at this annual Tibetan opera Festival.
Interestingly, the very word Shoton means Yogurt in English. It has a history of such a unique name. In Tibet, after the annual summer retreat of Drepung Monastery, laypersons offer yogurt to the monks following which opera festivals take place. And thus, it is called Shoton festival.
The 23rd Shoton Festival began on the day when the sky was gloomy. However, the spirit of opening day of the festival was alive despite the heavy downpour. Many people who were not in Dharamshala, could able to watch the live performance on TibetTV an official Facebook page of Central Tibetan Administration.
The TibetTV live broadcasting could reach 110,755 people, one thousand and nine hundred people reacted to live performance, there were eight hundred and seventy-six comments, and four hundred and fifty-two shared the live post.
