Dharamshala: Founded in 1959 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as an effort to preserve Tibet’s unique performing arts, the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) on 27 May celebrated its 47th founding anniversary.
The highlight of the occasion was cultural competition between Ngonpa and Gyalu, the two houses of the institute, at the TIPA Hall which looked festive with Tibetan style decorations.
Former Tibetan Chief Justice Commissioner Lobsang Dhargyal was the chief guest at the occasion. Congratulating the TIPA on successful completion of 47 years he said that the institute’s success is reflected through the cultural performances of the two troupes that every audience has witnessed.
He urged the TIPA to keep working on preservation of the traditional Tibetan arts, which is now on verge of losing.
Present at the occasion were the two Justice Commissioners of the Tibetan Supreme Justice Commission, members of the standing committee of the Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies, officials of the Central Tibetan Administration, representatives of the various non-governmental organisations, schools and institutions.
Kalsang Y. Dagpo, Director of the TIPA, briefed the audience about the establishment of the TIPA as a small institute with a small group of professional artistes and today it has become full-fledged school of learning Tibetan traditional arts.
This year Gyalu house bagged the prize and broke the record after winning the competition after 10 consecutive years.
