Tibetans Pray for Tsunami Victims
Dharamsala, 30 December: The Central Tibetan Administration held an official prayer for the victims of last weekend’s earthquake and subsequent Tsunami that killed thousands of people in south east Asia and Africa. Organised by the Department of Religion and Culture of the Central Tibetan Administration based here, the prayer ceremony at the Tsuglakhang main temple was attended by a large number of monks, nuns and lay public on Tuesday.
Prayers were offered for the rebirth of the dead in the higher realms, welfare of the families of the dead and healthy balance of the earth’s natural forces.
The earthquake which measured 8.9 on Richter scale is said to be one of the strongest and most destructive since 1775 when coastal areas of Portugal and some other European countries were hit by Tsunami killing around 60,000 people. An earthquake measuring 8.6 on Richter scale had hit Tibet on 15 August 1950.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama has sent letters to the Indian President and Prime Minister, President of Sri Lanka. His Holiness will also write to the leaders of other Tsunami-hit countries. His Holiness has contributed 500000 Rupees to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
