Tibetans Hold Charity Show for Tsunami Victims
Dharamshala 15 January 2005: Despite its busy schedule and hectic engagements in the relay hunger strikes all over India, the Tibetan Youth Congress, the largest non-governmental organisation of the Tibetan diaspora, has moved away for a while from political activism to charity.
The Tibetan Youth Congress, which is more famously associated with carrying out political activities all over the world, has come forward to help the Tsunami victims through a charity show. The organization aims to raise fund for the relief of the people affected by the recent catastrophe. The first show was held at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts last evening and another show will be held tonight.
The organisation has chipped in performers like Tenzin Gonpo (Michael), who recently brought out an album with Tsering Gyurmey, JJI exile brothers, Jamyang of Born Refugee, Achok Gonpo of Om fame, dance troupes from Chandigarh, Sarah and Mcleod Ganj. All the performers offered their services for free. The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts has not charged any fee for the auditorium and sound systems.
Many in the audience said that their presence at the show is out of sympathy for the Tsunami victims. “I think the Tibetan Youth Congress has done a wonderful job by holding this show. It serves two purposes, entertainment and charity”, says Lhundup, a young graduate.
“It is for the first time that I am helping others by being entertained myself, and it is indeed a pleasant feeling for me”, says Choeying, a member of Students for a Free Tibet.
