Dharamshala: Tibetans around the world on Sunday observed the commemoration of the 34th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize Conferment on His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Under the leadership of the Central Tibetan Administration, Tibetan communities across the globe observed ceremonies to honour the milestone.
The Tibetan community in Darjeeling marked the occasion by inviting Anit Thapa, Chief executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration(GTA) as the chief guest, Amar Lama, Principal Advisor of the GTA as the guest of honour and Dipen Thakuri, Municipality Chairman, Darjeeling as the special guest. Other guests include Sendup Dukpa, President, ITFS Darjeeling, settlement officer Pema Tsering Dhenmatsang, and the representatives of civil society groups.
The statements of the Kashag and Tibetan Parliament were read at the event. The chief and special guests gave their keynote addresses highlighting the significant milestone achieved by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his legacy in promoting the oneness of humanity.
The students of Sambhota School and members of the community presented cultural performances. To commemorate His Holiness’ tireless effort in the preservation of Tibetan language and culture, the Manjushree Center of Tibetan Culture projected a day-long screening of Tibet-related documentaries including the 1989 video of the Nobel Peace Prize conferment on His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the projector screen at Chowrasta, the centre of the market.
In New Delhi, the Tibetan settlement of Samyeling observed the occasion in the presence of Chief Guest Rinchen Lhamo and Special Guest Rinchen Khando Khrimey. The formal event was also attended by settlement officers, camp leaders, representatives of governmental and non-governmental organisations, and residents of the Tibetan community.
Tenzin Sangmo from the Bureau of His Holiness the Dalai Lama read out the Kashag’s official statement, followed by reading out the Tibetan Parliament-in Exile’s statement by Thupten Gyaltsen, president of the Regional Tibetan Freedom Movement.
The Chief Guest, Rinchen Lhamo in her address, spoke about the significance of fulfilling His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s aspirations and further assured her assistance to the Tibetan community whenever needed.The Special Guest of the event, Rinchen Khando Khrimey who is the National Convener of the Core Group for Tibetan Cause apprised the gathering about the border disputes in Arunachal Pradesh and further expressed his clear rejection of the state sharing border with China.
The formal event was followed by felicitation to Urgyen Tsewang, who has extended 25 years of service towards the Tibetan community healthcare. The celebration concluded with many exhilarating performances.
Mundgod Tibetans marked the event with an official programme that was presided by Chief Guest Smt. Gangu Bai Ramesh Manakar, I.A.S, Deputy Commissioner, Karwar; Special guest Kyabje Kundeling Tatsak Rinpoche, President at Friends of Tibetan Settlements in India (FOTSI) Chela Kunasz; Assistant Commissioner, Sirsi; Tahsildar, Mundgod; Executive Engineer & Assistant Executive Engineer, Public Works Department (PWD); Circle Inspector, Mundgod; BTSM & ITFS members, Abbots of Ganden and Drepung led-monasteries, Principals and head teachers of Sambhota school, Vice-Chair of Local Tibetan Assembly, representatives of Regional Tibetan Freedom Movement and Cooperative Society, Treasurers of monasteries, Village leaders, Marzur head, Executive Secretaries of Tibetan Primary Health Care Centre and Men-Tsee-Khang, Health Department’s Section Officer Kalsang Choedon, heads of RTYC and RTWA, local sports committee, local Tibetan opera association, and the general public attended the event.
The statements of the Kashag and Tibetan Parliament in Exile were read out, followed by the address of the chief guest and special guest. The DC assured Tibetans of the same level of support as Indian citizens receive and address the issues of the settlement.
During the event, the Settlement Officer and Vice-Chair of the Local Tibetan Assembly presented the dignitaries with mementoes. After the performance of traditional dance, the two top students of Sambhota school were felicitated. As part of the celebrations, a banquet was thrown for the officials of the state government and a group of Indian friends.
