PRESS STATEMENT
According to China.org.cn, Penkyi of Sakya County was issued death sentence with two years reprieve and two other Tibetans, Penkyi of Nyinmo County and Chime Lhamo were issued life term and 10 years imprisonment respectively for alleged arson by the Lhasa Municipal Intermediate People’s Court. The date of the sentencing was not specified.
The Tibetan Parliament in Exile reiterate our condemnation in the strongest possible terms the death sentence with two years reprieve issued to Penkyi of Sakya County by the Lhasa Municipal Intermediate People’s Court for alleged arson. The sentences coming soon after the death sentences issued to Lobsang Gyaltsen and Loyak; and death sentences with two years reprieve to Tenzin Phuntsok and Khantsug earlier this month despite international outcry for fair and open trial is an act of blatant attempt to reject all international norms for due processes of law.The death sentences is a means of rubbing salt over the already wounded Tibetan souls expressing their anger and frustration over the wrong policies of the PRC government that does not meet the aspiration of the Tibetan People. These acts will further alienate the Tibetans and in no way will either contribute to a peaceful resolution of the Tibetan issue or for the unity and stability of the Chinese nation. It is obvious that PRC is taking advantage of the world’s preoccupation with handling the global economic crisis and is testing the response of the international community at such time of crisis. Therefore, we call on the UN, Governments, Human Rights Bodies and all just and peace loving people of the world to do more pressure than ever before, to ensure fair and open trial in Tibet.
