Tibetan National Uprising Day Observed in Latin America[Saturday, 12 March 2011, 9:26 a.m.]
NEW YORK: The 52nd anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day was marked with a series of events in Latin America. In
Morelia, Mexico, the anniversary was marked with the screening of a
series of films on Tibet from 8 – 10 March. The films include Dreaming
of Tibet directed by Will Parrinello, Leaving Fear Behind directed by
Dhondup Wangchen, What Remains of US directed by François Prévost and
Hugo Latulippe, Undercover in Tibet made by BBC channel 4, and
Unmistaken Child directed by Nati Baratz. The event was jointly
organised by the Morelia chapter of the Mexican Tibet Support Group,
Pensando en Tibet, and Escuela Fabrica de Imágenes (School of
Cinematography) of Morelia. In La Union, South Chile, the
anniversary was marked with the screening of the film, The Sun Behind
the Clouds, directed by Tenzing and Ritu Sonam at the German School on
10 March. The programme was organised by the Friends of Tibet, Chile. In
Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, the anniversary was observed on 10
March with the opening of a photo exhibition on Tibet and a talk on the
52 years of the Tibetan struggle for freedom and current situation
inside Tibet by a Tibet Supporter and Uruguayan writer, Aloma
Sellanes. The photo exhibition includes pictures of Tibet’s
monasteries by a young Argentinean photographer, Sofia Abboud,
paintings by an Uruguayan artist, Cero Jaumandreu, which were inspired
by the Tibetan yogic saint Milarepa, and a portrait of Tibetan people
inside and outside Tibet facilitated by the Office of Tibet. The event
was organised by the Uruguayan Tibet Support Group, Tíbet Patria Libre.
In Guadalajara, Mexico, the anniversary was observed on 11
March, with the screening of Leaving Fear Behind, a talk on the current
situation in Tibet and display and serving of Tibetan food. The
programme was organised by the Guadalajara chapter of Mexican Tibet
Support Group, Pensando en Tibet. In Mexico City, the
anniversary will be marked by a marathon screening of films on Tibet on
Sunday, 20 March 2011 at the Foro Cultural Lenin (Col. Roma) in Mexico
City. The films will include Travellers and Magicians directed by
Khyentse Norbu, What Remains of US directed by François Prévost and
Hugo Latulippe, Unwinking Gaze directed by Joshua Dugdale, and The
Forbidden Team directed by Chap Chappell and Arnold Kroigaard. The
event is organised by Mexico City chapter of the Mexican Tibet Support
Group, Pensando en Tibet.
