Washington: When the U.S conferred the US Congressional Gold Medal to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on 17 October 2007 for being a relentless advocate for peace and compassion, the world saw it as a befitting honorary award owing to the significant contributions made by the His Holiness for consistently promoting nonviolence and encouraging the cultivation of basic human values. Tibetans around the world consider the day a significant milestone and fervently celebrate. As such, the scattered Tibetan communities headed by the respective Tibetan associations in the areas gathered to mark the day and pay gratitude to His Holiness and his unflagging efforts and contributions to bring about a peaceful resolution to the Sino-Tibet Conflict.
Around 10 Tibetan associations led members of the Tibetan communities comprising of ་Vermont, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Capital-Area, Washington State, Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota, Canada Tibetan Association of Ontario, Northern California, and Tibetan Alliance of Chicago celebrated the occasion on 15 and 16 October. Meanwhile, some Tibetan communities are said to observe the celebration this coming Sunday.
On 22 October, the Northwest Tibetan Cultural Association Portland commemorated the 15th anniversary of the US Congressional Gold Medal Conferment to H.H the Dalai Lama, followed by cultural dance performances.
A week before this, Tibetan Association Ithaca, jointly with Nampa Gyalwe Phende Lekshayling, observed the celebration through cultural performances and religious rituals. Tibetan Association in Capita-Area celebrated the event in the presence of Office of Tibet’s Secretary Tashi Dhondup.
The Secretary addressed the gathering in which he urged unity and collective effort. Moreover, he emphasised steering clear of unreasonable accusation that is not in line with good spirit. Among those who addressed the event were former Kalon Tenzin Namgyal Tethong and ITC’s Bhuchung. K. Tsering.
