President Jacques Chirac in China |
Dharamshala: Mr. Louis de Broissia, President of the Tibet Information Group in the French Senate, has requested the President of the Republic, Jacques Chirac, to raise the issue of Nangpa-La shooting during his visit to China.
Last August Mr. Broissia and a delegation of senators visited Tibet at invitation of the National People’s Congress of China during which they expressed their wish that the ongoing Sino-Tibetan dialogue must lead to an agreement before the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Following is the English translation of the text of the press release issued on 17 October.
Mr. Louis de Broissia |
The death of several persons at the Sino-Nepalese border some days ago had caused an indignant reaction. A witness account holds that the Chinese border guards had knowingly shot the Tibetans who were trying to regain Nepal-a video record proved this too.
The Chinese authorities had absurdly denied this occurrence. The President Louis de Broissia (UMP- Cote d’Or district ) has requested the President of the Republic to raise this issue when Mr. Chirac visits China next week.
Last August, Louis de Broissia and a delegation of senators, were invited to Tibet by the National People’s Congress of China. The Chinese side has then shown a willingness to appease the situation and showed a true desire for dialogue with the Dalai Lama.
This killing is in fact telling and cruel proof of the weakness of Chinese position. Yes, Tibet is seen as a prison by a number of Tibetan who try to flee by taking a risk to their life, and not an economic and social model one would envy.
It is urgent that China, which is facing an international opinion (Olympic Games of Peking in 2008 and the Universal Exposition of Shanghai in 2010) speaks out clearly what she wants to do with Tibet: a showcase window or a prison.
