Sao Paulo, Brazil : The Tibet House Brasil had convened two very successful lectures with Dr. Eve Ekman on 26 October 2019.
Dr. Ekman spoke on Science of Happiness and Overcoming Anger as key topics to a packed audience at the Conference Hall of the Hotel Trans America Jardim.
Dr. Eve defined happiness as ‘the distinct experience of fulfillment and satisfaction based upon the quality of being that we bring into the world, rather than the pleasure that comes from getting what we can from the world. In other words, genuine happiness is based on how we are and not what we get’.
“Although most of the research on meditation so far focused on “concentration practice”, a few other researches have shown that psychological practice of loving-kindness does benefit a lot in cultivating happiness and bringing a genuine joy of satisfaction,” said Dr. Eve. She went on to share some of her personal experiences in this matter.
She also went on to discuss about happiness paradox. She said research has shown that an increase in wealth doesn’t produce equal wellbeing.
Dr. Eve explained about the factors influencing chronic happiness level. Quoting a research finding, She said that only 10% of happiness is determined by circumstances, whereas 40% is determined by intention activities—how people spent their time (social connection), and 50% by genetic tendencies.
In the afternoon lecture on Overcoming Anger, Eve Ekman began with a definition of emotion, scientific understanding of emotions, functions of emotions, etc.
She concluded the session with a discussion on constructive and destructive emotions including the vocabulary of anger.
Dr. Eve Ekman is the Training Director of the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California—Berkeley, Co-founder of the California-Based Center for Emotional Balance with her father, Paul Ekman (a renowned American expert on Emotion) and Alan Wallace, and Co-author of The Atlas of Emotion with Paul Ekman and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
