Dharamshala: Ensuring continuity of children’s learning at home during this lockdown due to COVID-19 has been one of the major initiatives of the Department of Education, CTA. Beginning last month, DOE has launched several online educational programs to support learning at home facilitated by experienced teachers from the three Tibetan school systems in India. This week, DoE is going to launch a set of four video lessons for parents of primary children through Tibet TV broadcast.
The primary goal of these pre-recorded video lessons for parents of pre-primary as well as primary–aged children is to provide practical strategies for parents to support and guide their children’s learning at home as they are required to play a broader role in their children’s education during these challenging times. In these videos, we have tried to cover as many tips and guidance on how parents could support their children’s learning of Math, Tibetan and English at home using readily available household items and how to improve home-supported learning.
The level of support each child requires will vary substantially based on their age. A crucial first step that parents could take to support children is by helping them be ready for learning by creating regular routines and study habits. Providing the right amount of support at the right time, encouraging risk-taking in learning, retaining responsibility, encouraging ownership of tasks, etc are some ways of fostering independent learning skills. Parents are encouraged to help children develop these independent learning skills which will enable them to pursue learning throughout their lives and become life-long learners.
