DHARAMSHALA: The following report is what the Office of Tibet has gathered and gleaned from reports of various settlement offices spread across Nepal. Several areas are still inaccessible as a result of an avalanche triggered by the earthquake.
Solokhumbu and vicinity areas:
At least 28 Tibetan homes are affected by the earthquake in Chialsa settlement, Salleri in Solokhumbu. The walls of these houses have developed cracks.
The co-operative kitchen of the settlement has also sustained severe damages. The walls of the kitchen have fallen and are in urgent need of renovation at the moment.
Over 12 Tibetan homes are damaged in Namche, Khumbu and Thame areas in Solokhumbu. Most of the houses have developed cracks with two houses severely damaged, and are in urgent need of renovation.
Walung Settlement and its vicinity areas:
The earthquake affected over 18 homes in Foley Sampheling settlement, with cracks appearing in the walls of all the houses.
Fifteen houses were damaged in Gunsa, Yangmak and Walung areas.
Rasuwa Gegayling and its vicinity areas:
Eighteen homes reported cracks and fallen walls in Gegayling settlement and Thangmochen in Chilime district.
Six houses were severely damaged and are in need of complete renovation in Khangchim and Briddim. Eight houses in Rasowagadi and five houses in Langtang were also severely damaged and are in need of complete renovation.
Shahwara Settlement Office
The Shahwara Tibetan settlement office has sustained damages to its walls and windows. Computers, file racks and windowpanes of the office were damaged.
Jwalakhel Settlement, Kathmandu:
The settlement office and its staff quarters were severely affected in the earthquake. The camp’s compound wall has collapsed.
Choejor settlement, Kathmandu
The office boundary and the staff quarters of Gangchen, which houses 37 Tibetan families, were seriously damaged. The staff quarter needs urgent renovation from ground to third floor of the building.
Gyalphak Settlement, Kathmandu
One Tibetan family in Swayambhu seriously affected, currently under treatment.
Office of Tibet, Kathmandu
The office of Tibet has also sustained damages to its staff quarter, office building and compound walls. The water pipes and electricity lines were also damaged.
Lotserok Settlement, Pokhara
The boundary walls of the settlement have fallen. Several walls of Tibetan homes have also collapsed and are currently in urgent need of reconstruction.
Lodrik Settlement, Pokhara
Jampaling settlement, Paljorling settlement and Tashigang settlement have all sustained damages and are in need of reconstruction.
250 houses damaged in Tsum settlement, Tashiling.
At least ten Tibetans have died and four Tibetans including three nuns of Sengdrak nunnery are seriously injured in the devastating Nepal earthquake. The nuns were airlifted from Sengdrak retreat center to Kathmandu city for medical treatment.
Situation of Tibetan schools in Nepal
The following information is received from headmasters of remote Tibetan schools.
Mount Everest school in Chialsa, Solokhumbu and Sarawati school in Tserok, Mustang have developed minor cracks on classroom walls. Lopheling School in Manang has not sustained any damages.
Sharmay Wangphel School in Shabru, Rasuwa has suffered damage to its hostels. The first floor of the hostel is damaged and cracks have developed on the walls of the school’s kitchen. Schools in Pokhara have suffered only minor damages.
Information regarding Shabru settlement is still scarce as road to Shabru is blocked since 25 April. Even the phone lines are not working properly.
Sengdrak monastery cum retreat centre near the Tibet border, has suffered serious damages to all its living quarters. The monastery is located in one of the worst-hit districts called Sindhupalchowk. The nuns are living in sheds made up of corrugated sheets at first. However, it started raining in the area after a few days forcing them to seek shelter elsewhere. Somehow, Sengdrak Service Committee was able to deliver two bunches of tarpaulins with ropes by small helicopters. Currently, the roads are blocked because of severe landslides caused by the earthquake.
A SnowLion Medical team led by Mr. Sonam Tsering happened to be there at the nunnery at the time of the earthquake. This medical team was able to give emergency treatment to those injured in the earthquake.
Namgyal Higher Secondary School
The Namgyal Higher Secondary School in Kathmandu sustained severe damages to its boundary walls. Most of the school’s boundary walls collapsed and the few currently standing are in danger of falling any moment. The school’s drainage system is also damaged leading to sanitation problems.
Namgyal Middle School has also suffered several minor damages to its walls and compunds, although there weren’t any serious destruction.
Songtsen Bhirkuti Boarding School, Boudha
The ground floor, which is the foundation of the school building, is severely damaged leading to fears of the building collapsing in case of another aftershock. The floors of most of the classrooms are also cracked.
The school’s office has suffered damage to its walls. The kindergarten section of the school has also developed cracks on its walls.
Atisha School, Kathmandu
Atisha School in Kathmandu has suffered damages to its compound walls.
Thankfully, no student has died or suffered any serious injuries as a result of the earthquake.
