Riga: Honourable Sikyong Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration started his day in Riga (Latvia) with two media interviews, including the Latvian State Radio, on 29 January 2024.
In the afternoon, Sikyong Penpa Tsering attended a meeting with the members of the Latvian Parliamentary Support Group for Tibet, where they discussed the current situation of Tibet, drawing parallels between Ukraine and Tibet, international support for Tibet, and ideas for concrete action at the Latvian Parliament. While thanking the members for their support for Tibet, including those who participated at the last World Parliamentarians Convention on Tibet in 2022, Honourable Sikyong expressed his disappointment at the absence of any statement from the Latvian Government on PRC’s human rights violations at the United Nation’s Universal Periodic Review on China last week.
Later in the evening, the Tibetan delegation was hosted at the Riga City Council by the Deputy Mayor, Linda Ozola, where the ‘Tibetan Warrior’ film was screened, followed by a Q&A session and a reception for all who attended the screening. Many in the audience expressed sympathy, support and optimism for the Tibetan cause, citing their own country’s experience of independence from Russia.
