Shillong, Meghalaya: Shri Sandesh Meshram, Regional Convener for Western Region-I (Maharashtra & Goa) of the Core Group for Tibetan Cause–India and a staunch Tibet activist based in Nagpur, Maharashtra, undertook the 6th Janjagaran Cycle Yatra – “Pedalling for Freedom, Speaking for Tibet” to raise awareness among the Indian public about the grave situation prevailing in Tibet, India’s neighbouring region.
The Yatra commenced on 9 December 2025 from Bhumla, near the Indo-Tibetan border in Arunachal Pradesh, and successfully concluded in Shillong, Meghalaya, on 21 January 2026, covering approximately 2,400 kilometres across three north-eastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya. The initiative also held symbolic significance as it coincided with the Year of Compassion.
Earlier, Shri Sandesh Meshram, whom Tibetans called Samten Yeshi, had undertaken five Janjagaran Cycle Yatras in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2021, during which he pedalled nearly 18,000 kilometres across more than 10 Indian states, spreading the message of “Free Tibet–Save Tibet” and “Tibbat ki Azaadi, Bharat ki Suraksha.”
As part of the final leg of the 6th Janjagaran Cycle Yatra, Shri Meshram reached Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, at 5:10 p.m. on 19 January 2026, where he was accorded a warm welcome by the local Tibetan community. On 20 January 2026, he attended a press conference organised by the Tibetan Settlement Office, Shillong, which was attended by major press and media outlets.
Addressing the media, Shri Sandesh Meshram stated that the primary objective of the Yatra was to highlight the deteriorating human rights situation in Tibet and its serious implications for India’s national security. He emphasised that the Yatra was a humble effort to carry forward the longstanding call for “Free Tibet–Save India,” linking Tibet’s freedom with lasting peace and security along India’s borders.
On 21 January 2026, he addressed a gathering of the Tibetan community, outlining the objectives of the 6th Janjagaran Cycle Yatra and urging the Tibetan people—especially the younger generation—to actively engage in carrying forward the Tibet freedom movement. He reminded them of the sacrifices and efforts made by the older generation during the most critical phases of the struggle.
Following the address, Shri Sandesh Meshram officially concluded the 6th Janjagaran Cycle Yatra and announced that the 7th edition of the Yatra is tentatively scheduled to commence from Shillong in October 2026.
On behalf of the Tibetan community in Shillong, the Chairman of the Local Tibetan Assembly expressed heartfelt gratitude to Shri Meshram by offering a traditional khatag, along with a Medicine Buddha scroll and a book by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He thanked Shri Meshram for his unwavering support for the Tibetan cause and offered prayers for his good health and safe return to his home in Nagpur.
