BRUSSELS, Belgium: Mr Tashi Phuntsok, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the Office of Tibet, Brussels, Belgium, congratulated Mr Antonio Tajani, the new president of the European Parliament.
In his congratulatory note, he wrote: “The Office of Tibet wishes to present its compliments to you and take this very special opportunity to congratulate you for being elected the President of European Parliament.”
“His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetans have very special bonds with the European Parliament and the European Union. His Holiness is one of the most vocal supporters of the fundamental visions of the European union. He has been publicly applauding around the world the fundamental relevance of the European vision for the future of the interdependent world.”
“His Holiness the Dalai Lama presented the Peace Proposal for Tibet, popularly known as Strasbourg Statement, at the European Parliament, in Strasbourg on June 15,1988. Just recently in September last year Mr Martin Shulz, your predecessor, received him at the Parliament in Strasbourg. He also met with Mr Elmar Brok, Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs.”
“The Parliament too has adopted numerous resolutions on the issue of Tibet and challenges of human rights in Tibet. The most recent Urgent Resolution on Tibet was adopted on December 15, 2016. The resolutions have greatly inspired and strengthened Tibetan trust in the European Parliament as an institution that upholds human rights and supports the weak and oppressed.”
“We are confident that under your leadership the Parliament will bear the visionary leadership of consolidating the spirit of European Union which had brought unprecedented peace, security and shared prosperity in the region and elsewhere.”
“We also hope that you will continue to lend your good offices to resolve the issue of Tibet with China and further impress upon China to uphold the basic rights of the Tibetans in Tibet,” he said.
