RAVANGLA, Sikkim: A two-day programme on the women empowerment needs of the Tibetan population in exile was successfully concluded yesterday at Ravangla Kunpheling settlement in southern Sikkim.
The event was organised by Women’s Empowerment Desk of Social And Resource Development Fund (SARD), CTA, and funded by Norwegian Church Aid (NCA). This intensive training saw the participation of 60 Tibetan residents of the Ravangla Kunpheling settlement.
“It was aimed to address the core issue of women empowerment whilst engaging in a direct outreach to the grassroots constituting both women and men,” Tenzin Tseyang, a coordinator of the Women Empowerment Desk (WED) of the CTA, told this website.
Tenzin Dhardon Sharling, a member of the Tibetan Parliament in exile, was the resource trainer. Topics include gender status in the exile community, social and political leadership roles of women, unraveling the concept of unity, innovation and self-reliance for its implementation at the ground level. The post training feedback requested for more of such empowerment programs in areas that senses its imperativeness.
Last month WED, SARD, also organised the first ever training on ‘Socio-political and legal aspects of women empowerment’ in Miao and Tenzinghang Tibetan settlements. Namgyal Tsekyi, South Zone justice Commissioner and Yangchen Dolkar, a member of Tibetan Parliament in exile, were the resource speakers.
The public awareness programmes on women’s empowerment were earlier held in Samyeling Tibetan settlement in New Delhi and Sonamling Tibetan settlement in Ladakh.
