Dharamshala: EC (Election Commission) held a press conference at Lhakpa Tsering memorial hall on 27 September to announce the new date of the Kalon Tripa’s election.
The preliminary election of Kalon Tripa will be held on 18 March 2006 together with that of ATPD final round of election.
The final round of the direct Kalon Tripa’s election will be held on 3 June 2006. These changes were made to boost up the voters turnover as most of the Tibetans will be in their settlement around these time.
According to the chief election commissioner these changes were recommended by many people as the previous date for the preliminary election of Kalon Tripa, that is on 22 December, does not accord with the wishes of the majority of the Tibetan sweater sellers in India.
Only the children and elderly people will be left in the Tibetan settlements during that time. They suggested to the EC to arrange election in places where they do winter business if there is no possibility to change the date of election.
During the press conference many misinformation about the voter registration and place of voter registration was clarified.
EC clarifies that even if you have not cast your ballot in the primaries, you can vote in the final round of the election.
“The Local Election Commissions will count all the votes for preliminary election of ATPD cast in their own areas and submit them to the Election Commission here by 23 October”.
“The EC here will make a sum total of all the votes from 24 October to 7 November and will declare the result of the preliminary polls of the ATPD on 8 November”, chief election commissioner said.
