Dharamshala: Former political prisoner Phuntsog Nyidron had an audience with the Dalai Lama on 22 April 2006 during which His Holiness asked about her present condition and gave her advice on her future.
The audience took place in a town near Chicago where the Dalai Lama was on a visit.
Relating her experience, Nyidron said, “My audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama is something that I will cherish throughout my life”.
“This dream of mine that was finally fulfilled and it has given me immense personal satisfaction. His Holiness gave me advices on my future”.
“However, even as I was having my audience, my mind wandered to my fellow Tibetans inside Tibet, particularly the elderly Tibetans, who are longing for the fulfillment of their own similar dreams. I know how much more such an audience would mean for those millions of Tibetans if they had such an opportunity as I did”, she added.
Meanwhile, Phuntsog Nyidron has been undergoing medical checkup. His Holiness the Dalai Lama advised her to consult Tibetan doctors as well in addition to western medical care.
Phuntsog Nyidron is invited by the Reebok Foundation to their annual award ceremony in New York, which is to take place on 17 May. She won the Reebok Human Rights Award in 1995, but she will be presented that award on 17 May since she was unable to receive it when it was orginally announced.
Phuntsog Nyidrol, 34, was sentenced to eight years imprisonment after peaceful protests in 1989. In September 1993, she received nine years sentence extension after she joined 13 other nuns in secretly recording songs about their prison experience and hopes for future Tibet in a tape cassette that was smuggled to the outside world.
She was released in February 2004 after serving 15 years of 17-year sentence. She arrived in US on 15 March 2006 on medical basis.
