Washington, DC: A ceremony honouring US Congressman Jim McGovern for his unwavering support of the Tibetan cause was observed on 29 January in New York-based community hall Phuntsok Deshe. The event was jointly organised by the two Tibetan Parliamentarians from North America and New York and New Jersey-based Tibetan associations.
New York City Council Member Julie Won, Representative Dr Namgyal Choedup, representatives of the Tibetan NGOs and heads of religious organisations, and others attended the event bringing the total to 500 attendees.
Congressman Jim McGovern was taken on a tour of the Losel Ketsel weekend school where the principal briefly introduced the school to the Congressman who in turn thanked the students for the warm reception.
The presidents of the Tibetan associations delivered the welcome address, followed by the introductory and thank you address from the Tibetan Parliamentarians. North America Representative Namgyal Choedup and vice-president of the International Campaign for Tibet ་delivered their respective addresses thanking the Congressman for his long-standing support for Tibet in the US Congress .
Congressman Jim McGovern in his address stated his and the House’s support for the just cause was unwavering and assured continual support. He shared the significance of the new bill and urged Tibetan Americans to draw the support of the concerned officials to pass the bill.
During the ceremony, the weekend school children performed the cultural dance for the Congressman and he was thanked with ceremonial scarves.
