Dharamshala: On 25 May, Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay, Information Secretary Chemi Tseyang, International Relations Secretary Karma Choeying and Museum Director Tashi Phunstok held the inauguration of the new Tibet Museum after its successful completion of the preliminary stage.
The New Tibet Museum is one of the biggest project undertaken by CTA under the leadership of Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay. Parallel to preserving the cultural heritage, the New Tibet Museum will tell the uncensored story of Tibet to the world and it will be a center of learning for scholars and researchers around the world.
Director Tashi Phuntsok delivered the introductory address briefing about the 4-year process beginning in 2017 achieving successful preliminary stage-completion which was scheduled for launch this May. However, the second wave of Wuhan-coronavirus hit India halting the Museum’s production work being procured from a factory in Delhi which had to be temporarily closed after employees tested Covid-positive.
He introduced the various sections under Museum and their significance to the preservation of the distinct Tibetan heritage and the rebuilding of Tibetan cultural identity in exile, and emphasizing the section on the success story of diaspora Tibetans in diverse fields. He further added that temporary exhibitions, installations, and digital archives of the history of Tibet would soon be open to the public after the pandemic restrictions lift.
Chief guest, Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay in his brief address regarded the establishment of the museum as among the top priority of his tenure, including the e-chatrel project and the handing over of CTSA to Sambhota administration.
He spoke about the Museum’s role in raising awareness about Tibet and how the Tibet Museum’s exhibition of Tibetan cultural and historical facts and artefacts can strengthen the Tibet narrative on the global stage.
Sikyong expressed his gratitude to those who had entrusted and loaned the artefacts to the administration and the Museum staff who had worked tirelessly to bring the project to successful completion. Stressing on the paramount importance of the large-scale project funded by USAID and partially by Kashag, he said that it promotes awareness of the distinct Tibetan historical and cultural identity.
