Kathmandu: The Office of Tibet in Nepal and the Himalayan Buddhist Library and Cultural Centre organised the first Non-Sectarian Tibetan Buddhist Scholars’ Conference in Nepal at the Hyolmo Monastery in Tinchuli, near Boudhanath stupa, on 22 September 2023.
This conference is based on the guidance from His Holiness the Dalai Lama during the 11th religious conference in 2011. The conference seeks to introduce the Tibetan Buddhist traditions in Nepal, spread inter-religious harmony, and discuss the preservation of the traditions through theory and practice as well as the origination of their distinct characteristics.
The abbots and scholars of the various lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, namely, Nyingma, Kagyud, Sakya, Ganden, Bon, Jonang, Shijey, and Bodongpa delivered their addresses on the subject. The attendees posed questions to the speakers, who in turn clarified their doubts. The sutradharas of the respective traditions delivered their concluding addresses.
Tamang Tulku Lobsang Namgyal Rinpoche presided over as the chief guest while other guests included the abbots of the different traditions, Vice-Chairman of the Nepal Buddhist Associations, Presidents and executive members of each tradition, Tibetan Settlement Officers of Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Shawara, representatives of the governmental organisations, heads of the Local Tibetan Assembly and Regional Tibetan Freedom Movement, representatives of NGOs, heads of the Himalayan community, and representatives of the monasteries, which brought the total number of attendees to around 350.
