National Seminar Highlights Diluting Religion and Culture of Himalayan People
Dharamsala 4 June 2005- The deteriorating environment of the Himalayan region and the fast diluting religion and culture of its indigenous people was highlighted by a seminar on “Cultural and Religious Role of Indigenous Himalayan People” held on 31 May at the Gorkha Dukha Niwas Sammelan Library, Darjeeling.
The seminar emphasised the great urgency in the need for immediate corrective actions and the crucial role Tibet could play in safeguarding the religion and culture of the indigenous Himalayan people.
Representatives of the Central Tibetan Administration at Darjeeling and Kalimpong, NGOs and various local communities attended the seminar organised by the New Delhi-based India Tibet Coordination Office.
Speakers at the seminar include Mr. Gelek Namgyal, India Tibet Coordination Office; Dr. Kuldeep Chand Agnihotri, national co-convener of Core Group for Tibetan Cause; Dr. G.S. Yonzone, eminent botanist and environmentalist; Shri K.S. Moktan, former Inspector General of Police, West Bengal; Shri S.T. Lama, former civil servant of Government of India; Shri Tilak Rai, former joint director of Information, Government of West Bengal; and Mrs. R.E. Wangdi, senior lecturer at Loreto College.
