More Peaceful Protests Reported in Karze, Two ArrestedFriday, 3 April 2009, 2:38 p.m.
Dharamshala: With
reports coming from Tibet of more peaceful demonstrations against the
Chinese government’s repression, two Tibetans have been arrested for
raising slogans in two separate incidents in in Karze (Ch:Ganzi)
county, Karze Tibet Autonomous Prefecture (parts of which are
incorporated into China’s Sichuan Province).On 22 March,
26-year-old Pema Yangtso, a nun of Nyima Gesey nunnery was arrested by
Public Security Bureau (PSB) officials for shouting slogans of Tibet
independence. The information about her whereabouts is still remain
unknown.In another incident, PSB officials took into custody a
Tibetan youth in Karze county on 16 March. Losang Gyurmey, 29, called
for ‘Tibet independence’ and ‘prayed for long live His Holiness the
Dalai Lama’.Losang Gyurmey’s family consists of his wife, three children and an old mother, sources who reported the incident said. The location at which Losang Gyurmey is being held is still unknown, sources added.Massive Troop Deployment Affects SchoolsA
large number of Chinese para-military forces stationed in areas of
southwestern part of Tibet have seriously affected the normal running
of schools, sources reported 1 April. The Chinese government
has strengthened security measures following protests of farming
boycott by Tibetans in Dragko county in Karze Tibet Autonomous
Prefecture.Last month, children studying at a school in Dzakhog
township of Karze had to stop their study after Chinese security
personnel used class rooms as their temporary shelters, sources said.The government has also intensified repression in Dzagon Sargon monastery by sending massive reinforcement.In
a separate incident on 25 March, two monks from Minya monastery, Wanglo
and Thubten shouted slogans urging Tibetans to stop farming as a mark
of tribute to all those Tibetans who sacrificed for the just cause of
Tibet since March last year. One of them has disappeared after the
incident, sources said.On 27 March, armed police arrested 11
Tibetans for their alleged involvement in “farming boycott campaign” in
Drakgo county. Flanked by a row of security forces, they were paraded
in the main market. Their whereabouts is still unknown, sources
reported.Moreover, the Chinese officials have forced local
Tibetan residents to restart the farming work in their village and
issued warning to Tibetans of dire consequences, including threats of
beating. Some fourteen Tibetans have sustained injuries as a result of
severe beating for defying the order. They are undergoing treatment in
