Medical Governing Body’s Meet Concludes
Dharamsala, 7 August: The two-day general meeting of the first Central Association of Traditional Tibetan Medicine concluded today. The medical doctors of the Tibetan healing science have elected an eight-member body to regulate, monitor the practice of Tibetan medicine. So far, there were no such body to oversee the working of Tibetan doctors and practitioners.
The association will provide recognition and affiliations to the Tibetan doctors, medical schools and pharmaceuticals etc. It will set norms, rule and regulations for individuals and groups practicing Tibetan medicine directly or indirectly.
Dr. Namgyal Qusar, a member of the newly formed high level medical association, told TibetNet that the Central Tibetan Administration has provided the finances for the formation and working of the association and that the association will work in close coordination with the Central Tibetan Administration.
Law does not allow Tibetan doctors in foreign countries to practice traditional Tibetan medicine as it has no international recognition right now. The newly formed association, Qusar hopes, will help eliminate this problem.
There are doctors of traditional Tibetan medicine in USA, Europe and opthers where they take up non-medical jobs or practice under registered allopathic doctors in these regions.
” Tibetan medicine has helped many Indians recover from diseases which allopathic medicine had no cure for and the Indian government has given due recognition to our system of medicine. We are allowed to practice Tibetan medicine in India.”
On asked about the conflicting views regarding the formation of an association earlier and medical law, Qusar said, “There could not have been conflicting views on the formation of a governing body like this one, they might have been differing views on the enactment of the medical law which had been democratically passed. Amendments are possible but withdrawal is not.”
“Personally, I think that the association would surely help conserve the unique system of Tibetan traditional medicine. The Central Tibetan Administration, under the leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, had convened the first Sowa Rigpa conference and formed this association with a view to uphold the rich tradition of Tibetan healing science.”
