
Mandi: International Women’s Day was celebrated on 8 March 2026 under the guidance of the Women’s Empowerment Desk (WED) of the Department of Finance. The programme was organised with the aim of spreading awareness about women’s rights and empowering women through knowledge of the legal protections available to them.
On this occasion, Shrimati Alak Nanda Khanda, Advocate at the Sessions Court, Mandi and Councillor of the Mandi Municipal Corporation, was invited as the guest speaker by the Mandi Tibetan Settlement Office at the Rewalsar Tibetan Community hall. The talk was attended by the residents of the Rewalsar Tibetan community.
She delivered an informative and insightful talk on women’s rights under the Indian legal system. During her address, she emphasised the importance of being aware of legal rights and encouraged women to educate themselves so that they can confidently safeguard their dignity and justice.
She also highlighted the historical circumstances and struggles that led to the formulation of various laws protecting women’s rights in India. In particular, she spoke about the sacrifices and courageous efforts made by women, which paved the way for landmark legal developments and important judgments, such as the Bhanwari Devi case, that significantly strengthened the legal framework for the protection of women.
The session was highly informative and beneficial for the participants, as it helped raise awareness about legal rights and the importance of standing against injustice. The programme concluded with heartfelt appreciation for the guest speaker for sharing her valuable knowledge and for inspiring the participants to become more aware and empowered citizens.
