Tibetans greeted His Holiness for receiving the accolade in 1989 for his nonviolent and peaceful struggle to resolve the issue of Tibet and expressed gratitude for his tireless efforts to realise the cause of the Tibetan people in general, and in particular to preserve and promote the unique language, culture and religion of Tibet, as well as world peace. |

The Kashag expressed deep concern over the appalling human rights situation in Tibet and the fates of many Tibetan prisoners of conscience.
