Dharamshala: If His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Middle-Way Approach fails to achieve genuine autonomy for Tibet, it would be a tragedy for not only Tibetans and Chinese, but also for the whole of humanity, Kalon Tempa Tsering said.
“Our demand for a genuine autonomy for Tibet has remained consistent. And we will stick to the Middle-Way Approach proposed by His Holiness. If the issue of Tibet is not resolved within the lifetime of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, then this is very sad and unfortunate,” Kalon Tempa Tsering was quoted as saying.
Apart from distribution of various print materials, the seminar also released a special poster and sticker of “Year 2007: Intensive support to Tibetan Cause” |
The Kalon for Information and International Relations, who is also the representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in New Delhi, called for a unified commitment to move forward on the Tibetan issue, while addressing a 100-strong audience at a seminar on Saturday, 27 January, at New Delhi’s Shri Ram Centre Auditorium.
The event marking the launch of “2007: Year of Intensive support for Tibetan Cause” by Former Union Minister Satya Prakash Malviya, was jointly organised by India Tibet Friendship Society, Bharat Tibbat Salyog Manch, Himalayan Parivar and Himalayan Committee for Action on Tibet.
Prof. Brahma Chellaney speaking at the seminar on “Why should Indians support Tibet?” |
In his key-note address, Prof. Brahma Chellaney, of Strategic Studies Centre for Policy Research, said that India should reinvigorate the Tibetan cause, saying supporting Tibet is in the interest of India, and therefore, should not be viewed as a favour to the Tibetans.
He also underlined the fact that Tibet is Asia’s water reservoir, almost all the Asian countries depend on Tibet for water, which is why he said the Government of India ought to revive the Tibet issue in a very subtle and measured way.
Despite China’s efforts to colonize Tibet, heightened by the recent completion of Gormo-Lhasa rail line, Mr Chellaney said that the Tibet issue is still alive, as the Chinese have failed to win over the hearts and minds of the Tibetan people.
Apart from Dr. N.K. Trikha, national convener of the Core Group for Tibetan Cause, and Mr. Vijay Kranti, a prominent journalist, the panel of speakers included such eminent personalities as Prof. V.K. Malhotra (BJP), deputy leader of the Opposition (Lok Sabha), JDU General Secretary K.C. Tyagi, RJD MP Vijay Krishna, JNU Prof. Anand Kumar and Lama Choesphel Zotpa, member of the National Commission for Minorities.
