Human rights lawyers support Tibet

New Delhi The New Delhi based India Tibet Coordination Office and Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) jointly organized a meeting of a group of human rights lawyers and activists with some members of Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile (TPiE) at the Tibetan day school at Samyeling Tibetan settlement in New Delhi on 13 October.
The program started with the screening of documentary film Compassion in Exile to a gathering of 100 lawyers and social activists of HRLN from twenty different states from across India.
Mr Anand Asthana of HRLN gave the introductory speech to the gathering.
The members of TPiE present at the gathering include Mr Penpa Tsering, Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok, Ms.Youdon Asukatsang and Mr Choekyong Wangchuk. Mr Lhakpa Tsering, the Tibetan Welfare Officer in New Delhi, Mr Dhondup Dorjee, Vice-President of Tibetan Youth Congress and President of Regional Tibetan Women’s Association were also present.
In his address, Mr Pempa Tsering, director of the Tibetan Parliamentary and Policy Research Centre gave a brief introduction on the Central Tibetan Administration and also on the political and human right situations in Tibet. He also explained the activities carried out by the Tibetans in exile.
Later, the members of TPiE interacted with the lawyers on the human rights situations in Tibet. The lawyers expressed their willingness to provide legal support to the Tibetans residing in their respective regions.
The Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), established in 1989 is a collective unit of lawyers and social activists dedicated to the use of legal system to advance human rights.
HRLN collaborates with social movements, human rights organizations, and grass roots development groups to enforce the rights of children, Dalits, people with disabilities, farmers, HIV positive people, the homeless, indigenous people, prisoners and refugees.
