His Holiness’s Representative to Russia Attends Conference on Tibet in Ulan UdeMonday, 13 April 2009, 2:26 p.m.

round-table conference on ‘TIBET: PAST AND PRESENT’ was held at Ulan
Ude, the capital of Buryatia Republic in Russian Federation, on 3 April
2009. It was organized by the Institute for Mongolian, Buddhist and
Tibetan Studies (IMBTS), a branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, and
was attended by about 40 academicians, participants and observers. Prof.
B.V. Bazarob, Director of IMBTS, welcoming the participants, gave a
key-note speech, outlining the importance of promoting and preserving
the Tibetan Buddhist cultural heritage. The key-note speech was
followed by a talk by Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to
Russia & CIS, Dr. Nawang Rabgyal, who presented paper titled as
‘Tibet: Past, Present & Future’, focusing on the current situation
in Tibet, Middle-Way policy, and view and vision of His Holiness the
Dalai Lama for future Tibet and world. Twelve scholars
presented their papers on various topics, including Tibet’s history,
situation in Tibet, Tibetans in-exile, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s
peaceful initiative and Universal Responsibility, and the influence of
Tibetan Buddhism in Buryatia and Himalayan region. Presentations were
followed by question, answer and discussion. Tibet and
Buryatia ( in the eastern part of Russian Siberia) has had long
historical and spiritual contacts and connection for several centuries.
Many Buryats studied in free Tibet and became great scholar,like, Avang
Dorjiev (Nawang Dorjee), who became Tsanshab (Debate partner) of the
13th Dalai Lama and played a significant role in establishing contact
