New York, 11 October: With tears running down many cheeks and chanting “Dalai Lama, we love you”, the students of Universidad Iberoamericana, a Catholic institute of 10,000 pupils in northern Mexico, welcomed the Tibetan leader on Thursday as the university’s Dean Jose Morales Orozco escorted him to Sanchez Villasenor Auditorium, where he was to receive an honorary doctorate degree for “service to humanity”.
In his address to the university, His Holiness the Dalai Lama expressed his conviction in the need to balance the education of mind with that of heart, maintaining that a warm-hearted human being would be able use his or her intelligence in a positive way.
Universidad Iberoamericana is the second academic institute in Mexico to be visited by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Earlier, on Wednesday, he addressed a gathering of 1,200 faculty members and students of the National University of Mexico, receiving the university’s Gold Medal, the highest honor accorded to visitors.
On the same day, the mayor of Mexico City honored His Holiness as “The Distinguished Visitor to the Country” and hosted a reception with 100 special guests and an equal number of media personnel.
Following this, His Holiness visited the Congressional complex, and addressed some 450 members of the lower house.
His Holiness flew to Chicago on Friday morning, on his way to Frankfurt, and to New Delhi.
