PRESS RELEASE: His Holiness the Dalai Lama to visit the United States
21 April, 2001: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet, will visit six states of the United States from May 7 to 28, 2001 to give Buddhist teachings, including to the Chinese Buddhist community, and lecture on promoting human values and his message of compassion, peace and universal responsibility.
His Holiness will also be meeting American government leaders, both from the Administration and the Congress as well as state governors and legislators, during the visit. This is His Holiness’ first visit to the United States since President George W. Bush assumed the office.
Commencing his visit from Minneapolis, Minnesota (May 7 -9) His Holiness will give teachings on the topic of “The Twelve Links of Dependant Origination” and a public talk entitled “Compassion and Universal Responsibility in a New Century”. He will also address a joint session of the State Legislature.
In Salt Lake City, Utah 1 (May 10-13) His Holiness will teach “The Six Paramitas”, deliver an address on “Ethics for the New Millennium” and participate in an interfaith dialogue.
In Portland, Oregon, (May 13-15) His Holiness will be welcomed at the Pioneer Square Courthouse by the Governor. His Holiness will give teachings on “Generating a Good Heart and Awakening the Mind” and address a youth summit on “Educating the Human Heart.”
In San Jose, California, ( May 16-20) His Holiness will give a four-day teaching on the “Heart Sutra” and confer a Medicine Buddha Empowerment. He will also give a public talk on “Peace Through Inner Peace”
In Madison, Wisconsin, (May 21-22) His Holiness will participate in the Mind and Life conference, part of a series of meetings between Western scientists and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
His Holiness will visit Washington, D.C. from May 22 to 24 to meet officials of the new Bush Administration and to give the commencement address at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University.
In Los Angeles, California, (May 25-27) His Holiness will give a three-day teaching to the Chinese Buddhist community. He will also deliver a public talk on “Inner Peace for World Peace” UCLA Pauley Pavalion.
His Holiness fled Tibet in 1959 in the wake of Chinese occupation, and today lives in exile in India. His Holiness remains committed to the process of peaceful negotiations with the Chinese leadership as a means to resolve the problem of Tibet.
