His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Visit Florida, Puerto Rico
New York, 17 June: His Holiness the Dalai Lama is scheduled to visit South Florida and Puerto Rico from 19 to 25 September. This will be his second visit to Miami since 1999.
From 19 to 21 September His Holiness will give teachings on Padmasambhava’s “Garland of Instruction on the Views” at the University of Miami’s Convention Center, Coral Gables. He will also give a “Long Life Empowerment” and a public talk on “World Peace Through Inner Peace”.
On 22 September he will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the University of Miami, at which event he will give a talk on “A Human Approach to World Peace”.
On the same day, in the morning, he is scheduled to visit Florida International University and give a lecture on “Compassion: the Source of Happiness”.
The visit comes at the invitation of the University of Miami, Florida International University and Osel Dorje Nyingpo, a dharma center which announced that there would also be a Spanish translation of His Holiness’ teaching.
“The Dalai Lama’s visit to the University of Miami campus is part of `Celebrating American Democracy and Diversity’, a series of lectures leading up to the presidential debate on September 30,” the university website said.
From 23 to 25 September, he will visit Puerto Rico, where he will give a spiritual teaching to the local Buddhist community and a public talk on Universal Responsibility.
Over the years, there has been a dramatic increase in invitations for His Holiness to visit different parts of India and overseas countries, sparking off concerns among Tibetans, who pleaded with him to cut down on the visits and take more rest for his health.
But His Holiness insists that as long as he is alive and healthy, he has a responsibility to serve humanity in every possible way.
In deference to his wish, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India and the Office of Tibet in New York encourage the local organisers of his visits to make sure that the events graced by him do not become occasions for raising fund.
His Holiness does not accept fee or donation for his participation in any event whatsoever. He gives what he can and expects nothing in return; his reward–or “my profit”, as he puts it–is the happiness and sense of purpose that he is able to bring to the lives of others.
