His Holiness the Dalai Lama today praised the Indian government for the
support extended by it to Tibetans, especially in providing modern
education.Talking to reporters in Hyderabad, His Holiness, who
was there en route to Gulbarga, said the Indian government “has been of
immense help to Tibetans in the last 50 years”.”India’s support to Tibetans, especially in providing modern education, is laudable,” His Holiness added.Recalling
the efforts being made to protect Buddhist culture in the country, His
Holiness said more and more Indians, especially those from Ladakh, were
joining the monastaries set up in the country for theological studies.
His Holiness would leave for Gulbarga tomorrow for a spiritual
discourse at the ‘Siddhartha Buddha Vihar’. His Holiness the Dalai Lama impressed by Hyderabad’s developmentHis
Holiness the Dalai Lama has found Hyderabad more developed now than it
was
during his previous visit in 2006, particularly in the area of
infrastructure like the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. His
Holiness made the observation when Chief Minister K. Rosaiah called on
him at Hyderabad today.Stating
that education was key to development, His Holiness the Dalai Lama enquired about
the agricultural and industrial development as well as the literacy
rate in the State. The chief minister told him that the State accorded
priority to education and 17 universities were started in the last five
and a half years. The literacy rate in the State was more than 60 per
cent and the government initiated a special drive for improving the
rate further, he explained.”Hyderabad is also known as the
Knowledge Hub of the country and has the maximum number of Centres of
Excellence like IIT at Medak, BITS at Shamirpet, IIIT at Idupulapaya,
Nuzvidu and Basara.’’ According to the International Finance
Corporation-World Bank report `Doing Business in India 2009’, Hyderabad
is the second-most preferred destination for businessmen in India, next
only to Ludhiana, Rosaiah said.
