His Holiness Gives Rare Nyingma Sermon
New York, 23 September: Some 3,600 Buddhist practitioners sat through two days of intensive teaching at the University of Miami’s Convocation Center as His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Tuesday interpreted the text of what is arguably described as the most rarely offered instruction of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama began the teaching on the “Instructions on Garland Views” yesterday.
The text of the “Instructions on Garland Views” was written by Padmasambhava, an Indian tantric adept, who came to Tibet in the ninth century and played a pioneering role in spreading Buddhism among its “red-faced”, warlike people, thus setting in motion the complete demilitarisation of Central Asia’s dominant military power.
Amongst those who had come to receive the teaching were actor Richard Gere, Rato Kyongla Rinpoche, and Geshe Nicholas Vreeland. They had a private audience with His Holiness to extend a formal invitation for His Holiness’ teaching to the Buddhist community of New York in 2006.
His Holiness also made a brief appearance at an event organised by the International Campaign for Tibet, and elaborated on his approach to resolve the issue of Tibet by engaging in sincere dialogue with the Chinese leadership.
Later in the day, His Holiness gave a transmission of Semkye (Generating the Awakening Mind.)
