His Holiness Expresses Support to Develop Tashi Lhunpo Monastery

| Bangalore: His Holiness the Dalai Lama paid a visit to Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Bylakupee in South India on Friday, and said he has the responsibility to look after the development of the monastery. |

Holiness was accorded ceremonial welcome led by abbot and monastic
officials of Tashi Lhunpo and senior official of the Central Tibetan
Administration. He was then ushered into the main assembly hall as
sacred sounds of monastic trumpets and aroma of incense fill the aura.
The abbot presented Mendel Tensum offerings for His Holiness the Dalai
Lama’s long life.

His Holiness inquired about the number of monks and especially
those who recently came from Tibet. His Holiness also queried about the
progress in the construction of new temple. He was informed that the
construction work will begin from October this year. His Holiness
expressed his support for the project.

His Holiness was then led into Kelsang Phodrang, where he met the abbot and some senior monastic officials.
The
Tashi Lhunpo Monastery was established by the First Dalai Lama in
Shigatse in Tibet in 1447. It is one of the four great monasteries of
Central Tibet and was supervised and looked after by the successive
Dalai Lamas and Panchen Lamas.

The monastery suffered destruction following the invasion of Tibet by the People’s Republic of China.

1972, under the patronage of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the
monastery was re-established in the Southern Indian state of Karnataka.
The monastery has monks from Tibet and the Himalayan regions of Spiti,
Kinnaur, Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
