Dharamshala: His Holiness the Dalai Lama offered his felicitation to Ban Ki-moon on his appointment to the Secretary-General post of the United Nations.
In his congratulatory letter sent to Ban on 9 December, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said, “It is particularly encouraging that an Asian is once again chosen to assume this most important position in the world body.”
Wishing him success in carrying his new responsibility, His Holiness said, “The principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations are an inspiration to mankind and the UN has engaged in many laudable peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts throughout the world.

“It has an extremely important role to play. The United Nations is the only world body that many smaller and less powerful nations can look up to for support and help. I am confident that with Your Excellency at the helm of affairs at the world body the UN will move further forward more effectively and more justly”.
Ban, 62, will succeed Kofi Annan to the post of the secretary general of the UN. He was appointed to the said post by the General Assembly on 13 October.
He will assume the office on 1 January 2007, the day after Annan completes his two five-year terms.
