Dharamsala, 29 June: Lhagyari Namgyal Wangchuk, descendant of Tibet’s 33rd King Songtsen Gampo, was today enthroned at a coronation ceremony in the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The ceremony which was held inside the palace of His Holiness the Dalai Lama was attended among others by Kalon Lobsang Nyandak, who represented the Kashag, and Mr. Pema Jungney, the Chairman of the Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama congratulated the thirteen-year-old boy who is presently studying at the Tibetan Children’s Village School here.
The enthronement ceremony was held today as this is a monkey year which is considered holy by the Tibetan Buddhists. Lhagyari Namgyal Wangchuk, followed by his family, bowed in obeisance to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and offered traditional mandala.
His Holiness blessed the descendant of one of the greatest Kings of Tibet with Tibetan traditional scarves.
Talking to reporters later in the day, Lhagyari Phuntsok Dolkar, mother of Namgyal Wangchuk, said she felt so elated. “As a mother of a descendant of Songtsen Gampo, I feel I am fortunate to have the opportunity of being part of the family of Tibet’s great religious kings.”
Lhagyari family thanked His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan people.
According to a statement issued to the media later after the enthrone ceremony, His Holiness the Dalai Lama had advised the family to hold an enthronement ceremony to preserve the lineage of Tibet’s great religious Kings who would remain ever grateful to the Tibetans.
